Child custody

The permanent breakdown of a relationship is never easy, especially when children are involved. Divorce or separation can be a frightening prospect if you are worried about losing custody of your children or grandchildren. At Adams Law we’re here to offer advice and support during this difficult time.

In cases where the separation or divorce is amicable, joint custody (or residency) is the most common outcome. This means the children will be able to spend an equal amount of time with both parents. Key decisions that will affect the child’s life will also be made jointly.

However, an amicable outcome isn’t always possible – if the parents cannot agree on the child’s living arrangements, the decision will have to be made by the courts.

Whatever situation you’re in, Adams Law can help.

What we can do for you

In some cases, child custody disputes can be settled through mediation or the collaborative law process. This is the best option, as it often causes the least upset to both the parents and the child.

If an agreement can’t be made on who has custody of the child, then the family courts will have to be involved. They will decide what’s best for the child, and will take a number of factors into consideration, including the child’s wishes, their educational, emotional and physical needs, and how capable each parent might be in meeting those needs.

We have more than 20 years’ experience with family disputes, so we understand that every case is different, and that you no doubt have lots of questions about the legal process. Whether you’re a parent or a grandparent, we can answer your queries, enabling you to take the best course of action.
